A big thank you goes out to the kind donation of £100.00 sent to us from the Barlow Village Well-Dressing group. The completed Barlow Well Dressing is pictured on the left – the design is taken from a drawing by M Groves and the well was dressed by a team of local people.

Thank you to the Group in choosing Sight Support Derbyshire as one of their named charities and for the donation, which will go towards helping local people with a visual impairment, with services and support.

B&W themed lunch room‘O what a lovely afternoon it’s been!’  said Jean, a lady who regularly attends our social groups and who enjoyed our Black & White themed fundraising lunch on 11 August.

With over 40 people with a visual impairment joining the lunch at the Parish Spire Tea Rooms in Chesterfield, it made for a happy and lively afternoon. Everyone dressed up in black and white to keep with the theme and a prize for best dressed wasBest dressed winner & second also awarded – this was chosen by those attending the lunch, and the winner was……….Thurston, with Pat as a close second (pictured on the right with Maureen).

Andy gave us some entertainment by singing a range of tunes, which got toes tapping and shoulders swaying! He also ran a themed song quiz throughout the breaks – Many comments were made on his singing and his lovely voice. Many thanks to Andy for supporting the lunch.

EvaHuge thanks also go to Maureen and the North Derbyshire staff for arranging and organising a wonderful afternoon!

WW1 Heritage Project

1914 image crop

As many of you are aware over the last 8 months we have been working along with Tony Daw from our Derby office on a project to represent both the First World War and the role of Sight Support Derbyshire in those early days when it was first set up 101 years ago.

In recent weeks members have enjoyed trips, enactments and have also contributed to much of the work that has now been magically transformed in to a stunning tactile wall hanging with the assistance of Jenny and Maureen from Spiral Arts.

Members who had worked on the project were invited to the Post Mill Centre in South unveiling of bannerNormanton the 6th August where they enjoyed a free lunch and were able to witness the great unveiling of the work of art.

The final artwork was made out of a material which represented that of a www1 soldier’s uniform, appliqué squares were made by our visually impaired members to represent postcards sent to loved ones during this time, and words of comfort and what sight support meant to the members were then sewn on to bandages and placed in the pockets.

Celebration event WW1 bannerI must say a huge thanks to everyone who has helped to make the project a real success and to the Spiral Arts ladies Maureen and Jenny for putting all of the ideas together creating a wonderful tactile display.

The end project display banner looks and feels amazing and will be available for viewings around the county – Dates and venues for this are to be confirmed …. Watch this space for more information.

Medieval Market in Chesterfield……

Market wench

As part of the Mayor of Chesterfield’s Annual Appeal, the town of Chesterfield held a lively Medieval Market on 28 July.

Medieval musicians

The centre of Chesterfield was bustling, with lots of shoppers, visitors and medieval stall holders and traders. The last ‘real’ fairy also made an appearance with a one-eyed fox, along with medieval musicians and armour clad soldiers around the busy market square.

This year the Mayor of Chesterfield (Barry Bingham) has chosen 3 charities for his Appeal. Funds raised through his Annual Appeal are to be shared between: Sight Support DerbyshireNenna Kind and  The Chesterfield Royal Hospital Eye Centre.

Many thanks to the Mayor for his support.

Messing about on the water……

Canal trip membersSome of our Spire Support group members enjoyed a ‘grand day out’ on the Worksop Canal in July. The Chesterfield Canal Trust boat trip included a ride along the canal through 4 locks on the fully accessible  ‘Hugh Henshall’.  Canal Trust volunteers steered us through the locks, running up and down the towpath opening and closing the sluice gates and locks……keeping us all entertained! (pictured right)volunteers opening the locks

During the boat trip Sandy, one of the Canal Trust volunteers, explained a little about the history of the canal and the building of the boat, and then passed around a nail and piece of wood, so that we could learn about how the boat was made (pictures below left and right).

nail and wood demoThe group returned back to dry land for a meal at the Lockkeepers Inn, and a chance for everyone to talk about the canal boat cruise, Margaret said “I really enjoyed the boat trip as I’ve never done that before”.

Canal boat trip

Due to the success of this first canal trip, Maureen has organised for further Canal boat trips in other canal areas, in August and September, with our Clay Cross and Dronfield groups – we hope they enjoy the day as much as we did!
